Check these details before you tap cancel
On the mandate screen, look at the merchant name, the amount, the frequency, the next debit date and the e-mandate reference number. Note the reference number down — it is what a bank or the RBI Ombudsman will ask for if you ever dispute a debit.
If the mandate is a variable-amount one, it also shows the maximum ceiling per debit you approved; the merchant cannot charge above it. And any single debit over ₹15,000 pauses for your UPI PIN under the AFA rule — except insurance premiums, mutual fund SIPs and credit card bill payments, which run up to ₹1,00,000.
If the mandate is not visible in PhonePe
A mandate can be cancelled from any UPI app linked to that bank account, not just the one that created it. So try Google Pay (profile picture → Autopay), Paytm (profile icon → UPI Automatic Payments → Manage) or BHIM (Mandate → My Mandates).
Still nothing? Go through your bank's net banking under standing instructions or e-mandate, or submit a written cancellation request at the branch with your account number and mandate reference.
One important note
Cancelling in PhonePe stops the debit, not the service — cancel inside the merchant's app too, or dues may keep piling up. It does not affect your CIBIL score either, unless it is a loan EMI mandate, where a missed EMI does damage it.
FAQ
Will PhonePe refund the last debit? Not automatically. Report the transaction under Help, and a refund is possible if the debit was unauthorised or the mandate was already revoked.
Can the merchant recreate the AutoPay? Only with a fresh approval from your UPI PIN.
Conclusion
Manage AutoPay in PhonePe is one of the most useful screens on your phone and almost nobody opens it. Check it today and cancel whatever you no longer use.
