What is UPI AutoPay and subscription, and how do you stop it?

Your phone buzzes at 2 AM. ₹299 has left your account and you do not remember paying anyone. Nine times out of ten this is UPI AutoPay — a permission you gave once and completely forgot about.

What is UPI AutoPay, exactly?

UPI AutoPay runs on the UPI 2.0 e-mandate system. You approve the permission once using your UPI PIN, and after that the merchant can pull money on a fixed schedule without asking you again. That is how an OTT or gym app charges you every month while you sleep.

Two limits matter:

  • Any single debit above ₹15,000 pauses and needs your UPI PIN. This is the AFA (Additional Factor of Authentication) rule.
  • Insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions or SIPs, and credit card bill payments are exception categories with a ₹1,00,000 limit — no AFA needed up to that.

How do you even know a mandate exists?

Before the money is pulled you get a pre-debit notification. After the debit, a post-transaction notification follows, and it must carry the merchant name, the amount, the date and time, the transaction reference number, the e-mandate reference number, the reason for the debit, and your bank's grievance redressal details. Do not delete that SMS — the e-mandate reference number is what you need to cancel or complain.

How to stop UPI AutoPay in three steps

  1. Open any UPI app linked to that bank account — PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or BHIM.
  2. Go to the mandate screen. PhonePe: profile icon (top-left) → Manage AutoPay. Google Pay: profile picture (top-right) → Autopay. Paytm: profile icon → UPI Automatic Payments. BHIM: Mandate → My Mandates.
  3. Tap the mandate, choose Cancel AutoPay or Revoke, and confirm.

Useful to know: a mandate can be cancelled from any UPI app linked to that bank account, not only the app that created it.

One important note

Cancelling a UPI mandate does not affect your CIBIL score — the one exception is a loan EMI mandate, where a missed EMI genuinely damages it. Also, cancelling stops the debit, not the service; cancel with the merchant too, or the dues may still stand.

FAQ

Will the mandate expire on its own? No. It keeps running until its end date; it does not quietly stop early.

Can I cap the amount? Yes. For variable-amount mandates you set a maximum ceiling per debit, and the merchant cannot cross it.

Conclusion

UPI AutoPay is brilliant until you forget it exists. Open your mandate list once a month, and cancel whatever you are no longer using.
