The easiest way to cancel a UPI automatic subscription payment

You want to stop a ₹149 monthly debit, and in your head it already involves a bank visit and a week of waiting. It does not. The easiest way to cancel a UPI automatic subscription payment takes about forty seconds on your phone.

The forty-second method

  1. Open any UPI app that is linked to the bank account being debited.
  2. Go to the AutoPay or mandate section of that app.
  3. Find the mandate by merchant name and amount, and tap it.
  4. Tap Cancel AutoPay, Turn off or Revoke, depending on the app.
  5. Confirm on the prompt that appears.
  6. Keep the confirmation message — that is your proof if the merchant tries again.

The exact menu path in each app

  • PhonePe: profile icon (top-left) → Manage AutoPay → pick the mandate → Cancel AutoPay → confirm.
  • Google Pay: profile picture (top-right) → Autopay → tap the mandate → Cancel autopay / Turn off → confirm.
  • Paytm: profile icon → UPI Automatic Payments (or Settings → UPI & Payment Settings) → Manage → pick the mandate → Cancel.
  • BHIM: Mandate → My Mandates → pick it → Revoke.

The most useful part: you can do this from any UPI app linked to that account, not only the app where the mandate was created.

If the app route does not work

Go through your bank instead. On SBI: log in at onlinesbi.sbi → e-Services → Manage Standing Instructions / e-Mandate → select the mandate → cancel. As a last resort, submit a written cancellation request at your branch with your account number and mandate reference.

If money was already debited wrongly, report the transaction inside the UPI app (Help → Report an issue), then your bank after three days, and the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in if unresolved after 30 days. A refund is possible where the debit was unauthorised or the mandate was already revoked.

One important note

Cancelling the mandate stops the money, not the subscription — cancel with the merchant too, or dues may keep piling up. It has no effect on your CIBIL score, except loan EMI mandates, where a missed EMI does hurt.

FAQ

Can the merchant restart it on their own? No. A fresh mandate needs your UPI PIN approval again.

What about a debit above ₹15,000? It pauses for your UPI PIN under the AFA rule, so you get a chance to refuse it.

Conclusion

One screen, one tap, one confirmation — that is the whole job. Cancel the mandate, then tell the merchant, and the debit will not come back.
